Below we have reviewed various Tens Units from the best manufacturers in the business.

So what is a Tens Machine?

A tens machine or unit is a device that is used to block the pain signals in the bodies sensory nerves. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation known as TENS for short has actually been around for centuries and was first recorded being used in Ancient Greece. It was reported that standing on an electrical fish at the seaside provided pain relief. In later years electrostatic methods were used to control migraines and to provide relief from other pain. Obvious tens units have come a long way since then and the first modern Tens unit was used in 1974.

How do they work?

A Tens Unit basically works by transmitting low frequency electrical waves through electrodes placed on the skin on or around the area of pain. The bodies nerves pick up these signals and it effectively blocks the pain signals being sent to the brain.
The great thing about tens units are that they are widely available for home use and provide instant pain relief. They can also be used for long periods of time, however it is recommended that the electrodes are relocated on the body to allow the skin to breathe. The electrodes can also cause some minor skin irritation if used for too long in the same area.

Portable tens units are very effective for people who suffer from continued chronic pain as the devices are so small, often not much bigger than an pack of playing cards, that they can be clipped to a belt or kept in a pocket for use in numerous places i.e. whilst your sat at your desk at work.

What are they used for?

Tens also offers a great alternative to using medicinal drugs to provide pain relief, and it is also said that using a tens machine can encourage your body to produce the hormone endorphins. Endorphins are basically a feel good hormone which can actually provide further natural pain relief.

Tens machines can be used to provide pain from numerous sources such as back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, muscles injuries, torn or ripped ligaments, nerve injuries, migraines and skeletal pain. There have also been reports that patients have felt pain relief from cancer pain.

There are also other uses of tens, and they are commonly used during child birth to provide a drug free birth.

Athletes, bodybuilders and anyone who generally wants to increase muscle tone also use a tens to stimulate the body’s muscles. Some tens units actually double up as a electronic muscle stimulator which provides differing modes in which the person can stimulate the body’s muscles whilst sat down. This is great for people who may have suffered an injury and cannot train but which to carry on stimulating other muscle groups in their body whilst they recover from injury.

It should also be noted that the electrodes should never be used in the following locations:

  • On the front of your neck
  • Over the eyes as there is a risk it will increase intraocular pressure.
  • On the front of the chest
  • On wounds, cuts or any areas of broken or damaged skin (although can be placed around the area)
  • Directly on the spine
  • Shouldn’t be used internally

One should always seek guidance from a medical professional before using a tens machine and seek advice on the best area to place the electrodes to get the most effective results.
